About INNERSTATE

INNERSTATE is a moving, original documentary film that breaks down the wall between traditional patient awareness efforts and the unvarnished realities of coping with a devastating disease. The film and its 13-city screening tour across the U.S. was developed by Centocor, Inc. as a new approach to raising disease awareness and inspiring patients to take action about their condition.

This first-of-its-kind film chronicles the "inner states" of three everyday adults afflicted with chronic, life-altering diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, plaque psoriasis, and Crohn's disease, as they deal with the associated challenges and sacrifices they and their loved ones have made along the way.

Through the first-person accounts of Janie, Jason, and Ray, as well as their families, loved ones, and physicians, INNERSTATE depicts the highs and lows of living with a chronic condition and the unfaltering support from family and friends that inspire these adults to achieve their dreams.

The goal of INNERSTATE is to provide viewers with a better understanding of the daily and lifelong struggles faced by these three individuals and the millions of others like them. While the conditions that Janie, Jason, and Ray suffer from may seem unrelated, they are all categorized as immune-related inflammatory disorders — diseases characterized by malfunctions of the immune system and chronic inflammation. Although much progress has been made scientifically and clinically in understanding these disorders, how they develop remains to be fully explained.

To help patients with these conditions understand treatment options, the film also explores the importance of establishing an open dialogue between patients and their doctors, finding an appropriate treatment, and the benefits and risks associated with therapies. INNERSTATE documents Janie, Jason, and Ray, along with their physicians and family members, engaging in true-life discussions about their diseases, their struggles, their triumphs, and the choices each made to begin treatment with a biologic therapy.
